Finding the right coach can have a huge impact on your training program.

Do you want to get faster?

Do you need a custom training program?

Do you want to run a marathon?

Last year, I decided it was time to find a running coach. I had run 14 marathons trying to adapt various coaches' programs to my training. But being my own coach just didn't have the same accountability factor as having a real coach.

Here are 6 KEYS to finding the right coach:

  1. Define your goal. Do you want to get faster? Do you want someone to customize a program for you? Do you want to train for a certain distance?
  2. Determine your medium for coaching. Will you meet live with your coach? Will you correspond via the Internet, email, phone? How much time and attention do you need and want?
  3. Do your research. Is this coach an expert? Does he have a book with a training program that is appropriate for your level? Does he practice what he preaches? What do others say about him and his coaching program? How successful are his athletes in the areas in which you are looking to excel? How do his rates compare to those of other coaches?
  4. Make contact and discuss expectations, options, and procedures. Sometimes it's easy to tell people what to do and just expect that they will do it. What if you have to rearrange your schedule - is he flexible with his instruction? Will you have input on the types of workouts? And, how is this going to work? What will happen on a day-to-day, weekly, monthly basis?
  5. Trust him and follow his advice. If you decide to hire him, you must trust that he knows what he's doing. Make a commitment to do the workouts and be accountable.
  6. Remember: Just "having" a coach will not make you faster or more successful. Your coach is just a teacher - you have to do the work.
