The basic requirement is to expend the maximum amount of energy without reaching burn out. The most important point is to perform the exercise on a frequent basis, at least five days per week, and for a reasonable length of time - at least half an hour. Don't concern yourself with distance, pace variation and other such intricacies, just run at a pace you can handle for half an hour. If you do this regularly, it will not take long for you to see the benefits.

As you get fitter, you will run further, and so you will burn more calories, but as long as you stick to your 30 minutes each day, running at the maximum pace that your body will comfortably stand, you will burn the maximum calories. So just how effective is running as a weight loss exercise? Well, there are many variables to consider, but in general if you run at an easy pace - for example five miles per hour - for half an hour, you will burn up to 1000 calories. However you look at it, that's whole bunch of calories, so don't overdo it! It's no good having an intense session one day and then taking the next couple of days to recover, remember the key is to run every day. If you can continue running regularly on this basis you could lose a total of 37 pounds during a 12 month period, and that's a whole lot of body fat off your figure!

Generally running is a solo sport and this can be quite a barrier for some people, so it may be worth considering joining a local club where there are like-minded enthusiasts who can offer friendly help and support.
