When your body is properly positioned your eyes will be directly over the ball, maybe a little in front or behind, but still directly over the ball or target line.

The target line extends through the ball and to your target this is the line your ball should follow after you make your stroke.

It is actually better for your eyes to be behind the ball so you can look along the line to the hole without twisting your head.

If your eyes are too far in front of the ball it puts your weight forward and will usually cause you to use a more downward blow on the ball.

Positioning your eyes properly over the target line allows for the preferred straight-back and straight-through stroke, which keeps the putter directly over the target line for the majority of its path.

There are a couple of test you can give yourself to verify that your eyes are in the right position, you should do this before you find yourself having problems with your putting.

Take your normal position with putter in hand, after you are in place, throw the putter away and take another ball out of your pocket, hold it to the bridge of your nose and drop it.

If you are in the proper stance, the ball should hit the ball on the ground or right next to it on either side of the target line. The second method involves a mirror and a thin roll of colored adhesive tape.

Place a line of tape down the center of the mirror extending at least a foot past both edges of the mirror.

Cover the mirror with a piece of paper, place a golf ball on the tape right at the edge of the mirror and take your stance.

Take aim at a point further down the tape, when in your stance have someone remove the paper.

If you are in the proper position, your eyelashes should be visible on either side of the tape, but your eyeballs should be covered by the tape.

Using either of these tests will allow you to keep your eye position correct if you continue to use them occasionally during your practice sessions.
