Last Sunday the New York Jets acquired the five years veteran Kevan Barlow who used to play for the San Francisco 49ers. This was made in exchange for an unidentified pick in the 2007 draft. Apparently, the pick involved is a fourth-round choice that can become a higher selection if Barlow reaches predetermined performance levels, but neither team confirmed that. The deal is contingent on Barlow passing a physical.
The 27 years old running back who couldn’t participate in 4 games last year due to a knee injury, has appeared in 72 games and started 30. Barlow has also rushed for 3,614 yards and 24 touchdowns on 891 carries. Barlow’s best season was in 2003, when he carried 201 times for 1,024 yards and six touchdowns. The former University of Pittsburgh standout also has 137 catches for 1,143 yards and three touchdowns.
Barlow’s contract includes three seasons: the first one with a base salary of $2.5 million. The year 2007 will bring a raise so he will be making $3.25 million and for 2008 it will be increased to $4 million.
Last Monday, the New York Jets traded for Cleveland Browns running back Lee Suggs, hoping to get help with Curtis Martin out. But Suggs failed his physical Tuesday and the deal was canceled.
The New York Jets are desperate to find help for the running back position. Martin has been on the physically-unable-to-perform list since training camp opened with a lingering knee injury.
Even though Curtis Martin hopes to play again, his future is uncertain. The New York Jets have refused to reveal when Martin could return. Without him, the Jets have put their high hopes on Derrick Blaylock, Cedric Houston, and rookie Leon Washington. All of them played well in their exhibition game Friday against Washington.
