Finding the right ballet shoe is every important. This article will help you understand what you should look for. Finding the right ballet shoe will ensure that you don't damage your foot, thus affecting your dancing. Those who have never bought a ballet shoe before sometimes don't know what to look for. Not all ballet shoes are they same. You're going to learn some important things that you must look for, and the different types of shoes available.

Beginners Shoes - Leather & Canvas Soles

If you are a beginner we would advise that you choose a full sole leather ballet shoe. This shoe is ideal for the younger dancer, the reason for this is that the sole of this type of shoe is strong and also very flexible. This type of shoe is very good for a person who is beginning ballet as it helps strengthen their feet, which is very important at this formative stage.

As you get older and your free or stronger, of if you've taken ballet classes before a you might consider a leather split sole ballet shoe. One of the advantages of a leather split sole shoe is that it can look better on the foot but it also molds into the shape of your foot much easier. However before making a decision it is best to ask your ballet teacher.

Another question often surfaces - should I go for leather or canvas?

The answer depends on a number of factors. Leather shoes tend to be more snug but will only stretch when broken in, i.e. worn for some time. Canvas shoes tend to be more comfortable but the do not stretch. Canvas shoes, due to the number of pleats in them, can accommodate a wider foot.

Check also to see the surface you are dancing on, as leather shoes tend to provide more traction when dancing on wooden floors. However on a Marley floor, canvas tends to be better as leather can stick to this surface!

Price is another consideration. Canvas can be cheaper, but leather ballet shoes will last longer, especially if you are dancing on wooden floors.

To add more decisions you also need to consider how easy it is to clean your shoes. For obvious reasons leather shoes are more difficult to clean, as canvas shoes can be washed in a washing machine.
