When you watch someone dance professionally, you hardly think about what they're wearing on their feet. All you usually focus on is the twirling, spinning, dipping and jumping. However, having the right pair of dance shoes is extremely important in the world of dancing. After all, how would any of those dancers be able to do what they do if they couldn't stand on their own two feet comfortably? Let's take a look at the different kinds of shoes that are out there.

When someone is a jazz dancer, the type of shoe that they wear is different than other forms of dance. The shoe usually consists of a very low heel (if any) and is padded so that you do not hear the dancer's steps on stage. Jazz dance, however, is a general term that can refer to other forms of dance such as ballet, jazz or tap dance forms.

Because of this reason, the type of shoe that one wears can vary. If a person decides to perform a dance routine to a ballet-type of jazz dance, then she will opt to wear ballet shoes. Ballet shoes are more like slippers than shoes. They are a closed-toe shoe that slips on and do not have any sort of heel to them. They usually fit snugly and are padded on the bottom so that you do not (or should not) hear the dancer's movements while they are performing on stage.

If a person is performing a jazz-tap style of dancing, the type of shoe that they will wear will usually be a closed-toe shoe consisting of a small heel. The shoe will have a harder toe box, which will allow the dancer to hit their foot on the stage for added effect without hurting their toes. Unlike, other style of dancing, tap dance is more focused on foot movement versus total body movement; therefore, more emphasis is placed on the lower body being the only part of the body that moves. Ideally, a dancer will try to keep their upper body more still. The major difference in this particular shoe is that on the sole of the shoe there are usually one to two metal looking plates that are attached to the bottom of the shoe. One is usually affixed to the heel while the other one is affixed to the front sole. This is what gives dancers the sound of "tapping" whenever their feet hit the stage. Tap dance is still very popular and is fun to watch.

There is also a style of dancing referred to as salsa dancing. Salsa dancing is exciting to participate in as well as to watch. Usually, the dancer will have on some sort of extravagant, eye-catching outfit. Again, much emphasis is placed on more movements of the lower body. The type of shoe that is worn is usually a shoe with more of a heel. Also, the shoes can be closed-toe but it is not unusual to see an open toe shoe. The type of shoe that a salsa dancer wears has to be sturdy and probably has some sort of strip on the sole of the shoe to encourage traction, since most of the dancers usually perform on hardwood floors. Salsa dancing places a lot of emphasis on movement and flexibility, and so the last thing they want to worry about is slipping.
