Those of you who read my articles know how I covet the jab. You understand how it sets up different combos, and punches. A neglected punch that often doesn't get worked off the jab, is the hook. Why do you want to hook off the jab? Because fighters often get lazy with throwing their jab, and bring it back low. This obviously leaves them open for a counter shot. A perfect counter shot to throw follow through with is the hook.
Fighters get used to what they see the most of. They expect the typical right hand and left hook that follows the jab. They expect double and triple jabs. What combo they don't really get enough looks at though, is that quick and deadly hook off the jab. This is perfect to use with lazy fighters. You can easily set them up for this punch. We all know that the hook is the punch that the fighter rarely sees. It makes perfect sense then to come quick with it after a potent jab.
If you can get a fighter fearing your jab. You have him. We all know this. If you have him focused on that potent jab, you can get him out of there quicker with that deadly left hook that will put him in la la land.
That's how you set him up. Throw a double and triple jab. Throw a real hard jab after that combo. Keep him guessing, and befuddled by your powerful weapon. Then when you see that his attention is focused on your jab, throw a hook, and even double left hook after that. You will hurt him badly, or get him to fear you even more, while taking him away from his fight plan.
Try it in sparring, set the hook up with your jab. Hone this weapon in the gym. Then when it comes to fight time, you unleash your deadly new combo. You will see what this sorely underused combo can do for you.
